Opinion? What's that?
If you are unable to activate or register the game (via SDC, or after installing the latest patch), you're likely encountering one of a few common problems.

1) Your game came with NO serials at all.
There have been some reports of legitimate retail copies of the game not coming with a serial key at all. If you are sure your copy is legitimate and it did not come with ANY serials, contact support@stardock.com.

2) You're using the wrong serial.
This is a simple but common mistake. The Collector's/Limited Editions of the game normally include two serial keys (one for the game, one to unlock the special extra content). Be sure you're not trying to register with the CE serial (the one that begins with GC2). Use the other one which consist of 28 letters/numbers (A-F and 0-9 ONLY) with no dashes.

3) You bought a used copy of the game.
If you (intentionally or not) bought a used copy of the game, you may receive a message when attempting to register/activate to the effect of the serial already being in use, or your email address not matching the one the game was originally registered with. Stardock will not remove an activated serial from the original owner's account and give it to you.

You have a few options in this case. You can:
  • Keep the game and stick with the 1.0 version on the disc.
  • Return the game to the place of purchase. Some retailers still accept returns, especially if they resold to you a returned copy that the original owner has effectively pirated (resale is prohibited by the EULA).
  • Contact stardock support (support@stardock.com) and ask about pruchasing a new serial code at reduced cost.

4) You bought the European Limited Edition.

Some copies of the Limited Edition of the game distributed in Europe were shipped with only the code to unlock the special Ltd. content, (beginning with GC2) and not an actual game serial. You can request a game serial by providing your Limited/Collector's Edition serial and email address on this form: http://galciv2.com/paradox/index.aspx

5) You bought the US Collector's or Standard Edition in June or later.
There have been several production runs that shipped to retail in the US without the correct keys. Some Collector's Editions shipped to WalMart and Fred Meyers included two CE keys (beginning with GC2-), but no game serial. Some Standard Editions have shipped to Best Buy and other retailers with a single CE key and nothing else.

In either case, please first try inputting your serial and email address on the European serial exchange page, which has been updated to include most of the serials from these production runs: http://galciv2.com/paradox/index.aspx. If that does not work, please contact support@stardock.com with your problem and they will provide you a game serial to use.

Please keep in mind they can only answer during business hours, so if you contact them on a weekend you will not receive a [human] reply until Monday at the soonest. You should receive an automated reply immediately upon receipt of your email, though (check that it is not filtered by any spam protection you have in place). If you do not receive an automated reply, your own message was likely stopped by Stardock's spam filters, so you will obviously never get a reply to that particular message! If all else fails, try getting on Stardock Central's Chat and speaking with an employee directly during business hours (IRC users: irc.stardock.com, channel #Stardock or #GalCiv).

6) You bought a pirate/bootleg copy of the game.
Despite our best efforts, sellers on eBay and elsewhere continue to sell bootleg copies of GC2. There are usually many tell-tale signs that these copies are not legitimate which become obvious once you receive them: poorly printed disc art, cheap-looking packaging, missing documentation, etc. Most of these copies claim to be used "Import Version" games, and the sellers claim that documentation is excluded because it is not in English. If these copies contain a serial key at all, they are generally already registered or just random gibberish.

In any case, there is no support for users of pirate/bootleg copies. If you purchased them through eBay, you may be able to file a claim and get your money back, but there are no guarantees. If you wish to own the game with updates and support, you must purchase a legitimate copy, which will entitle you to your own serial key and all the associated benefits.

When I'm trying to download the game from stardock on my laptop it stops and says "object refrence not set to an instance of an object".  i have already played the games on my desktop.  What should i do?

on Dec 25, 2008

See the announcement at the top of the forums; we had a major server failure yesterday and are working as fast as we can to fix it.

on Dec 25, 2008

Installed Impulse first, then bought GCII for download.  Started Impulse, logged on automaticly, and found download tap. Clicked on GCII and download tried to begin. After 5 minutes got message: "Object reference not set to an instance of an object"

A check of error log says the Activation code is correct.

What should I do to get the game?

Hopefully this is the right place for my issue.  I have a long history on GalCiv (see Gorde to find out how many games I've played) and it's worked smoothly until this last time.  I had to upgrade my OS from W2K to XP and in doing so I needed to reinstall.  I used Impulse to reinstall (and it correctly shows my account), yet when I went to post my latest game (as usual, started from the Metaverse screen), it showed a registration error (it said something like the numbers don't match between my Gorde metaverse account and the version Impulse gave me).

Adding to my Metaverse score is one of the things that keeps me coming back--can you please let me know how I can fix this (starting a new metaverse account isn't an option for me)?

ETA: I tried to reactivate the game after downloading the latest patch and got an error file.  I saved it in case it's needed, and before you ask, no I don't have the serial number--I got the impression it was all kept under my login with Stardock Central-turned-Impulse.  I've been playing this game since the original came out and this is the first trouble I've had.

What should I do to get the game?

That issue should be resolved since the servers came back up late xmas day.

If you're having activation issues as well, your best bet is to contact support@stardock.com about this one.

Hey kryo - you're my last hope. I've seen all of the awesome things that you've done for so many people, so I'm kind of asking you somewhat directly. My problem has a little to do with activating the game, I guess. I'm mainly asking on this thread because I have already e-mailed support@stardock.com twice about my issue, and I have waited a total of 15 days for a response - and they've said NOTHING. I know that the e-mail went through because I received my ticket from stardock saying that they had received my e-mail; they said that there would be a response in 1-2 business days. Like I said earlier - NOTHING.

OK, so here's my problem (besides the no e-mail return) - when I first bought GalCiv2, I installed it on my computer and registered it just fine. I had to receive an Impulse account and all that good stuff, as well. Well, my first Impulse/GalCiv2.com login that I gave, I really didn't like in hindsight. It revealed too much personal information in the name. So, I tried to change it in the My Account section of Impulse. Obviously, I changed the login to Cypher. Now, I also kept my same password, if that makes any difference at all.

The login Cypher works perfectly for getting me into the GalCiv2 forums and the MV, but it totally fails on Impulse. Impulse appears to accept my new login, but once I exit out of Impulse and then return, after a few seconds of the computer "thinking", a message pops up that says - Could not login. Invalid Stardock.net account. A Stardock.net account does not exist for ********* (name of old account). You must register the account first.

If that's not weird enough, I hit the little red X in the corner of the pop-up message, and I am then taken to Impulse. I look at the top of the page, and it says that I am logged in as Cypher. I am beginning to think that something is seriously screwed up.

Once I am "logged" onto Impulse as Cypher, I see that the top tab that was labeled My Desktop is gone, along with all of the free downloads. I also notice that I can no longer access My Account. This is completely new because I have tried changing my login from what it used to be to Cypher, and then I would change it back again to the old login once I realized that something weird was going on, and the old login was ACCEPTED!!! But now, I can't even get onto My Account anymore. I click the link, and nothing happens.

Also, and this may be completely unrelated to Impulse, but when I go to click Edit My Account on the GalCiv2 website, a very long and detailed Server Error message pops up. This might not even be restricted to me, but it has been happening even when I had my old login (long before your servers crashed).

As you can see, I have a very long and detailed list of problems. I'm really sorry if these problems have nothing to do with the actual threads purpose - I just figured that I should ask you wherever possible - so here I am.

One last thing - I am a little bit afraid that in connection with all of my problems on Impulse, I may not be able to update any of my registered games anymore. I was never going to download it, but that free version of Political Machine in the My Games tab on Impulse also vanishes with the new login (it used to return when I switched back to the old one, but that's no longer possible). I think that pretty well sums up my many issues. Again - sorry!!! I would have (and have!) e-mailed support@stardock.com, but they have been fairly unreliable recently. Thanks for hearing me out.

Sorry, the office was closed for the past two weeks for the holidays. Support was in on each Monday to try and keep the queue pared down but there's only so much that can be done. We're all back now though so they should get to it as they work through the queue over the next couple of days. As you're having an account issue they will need to handle it, as that sort of thing can't be done over the forums for security reasons (and I don't have access to the user db anyway).

Unrelated--the link on the main page doesn't work, but the My Account link here on the forums pages should be fine.

Thanks Kryo. I'll e-mail Stardock as soon as I can. I also had 2 weeks off for the holidays, so I know what you mean. Again, thank you and Best Regards.

Also, and sorry for this being both a double post and off-topic, but seeing as you're here right now, I'm asking here - Do you (kryo) know any moderators that could possibly set up a sticky regarding "Show Off Your Ship Designs '09"? I've had a few people asking me if this is at all possible, but seeing as I'm not a moderator, nor am I familiar with the division of tasks over at SDC, I was wondering if you could set up a sticky for '09, or have someone set one up? Thanks and Best Regards.

If you've got some designs to show, go right ahead and start one and I'll swap the sticky out.

Hi guys,

I bought the game long time ago and GalCiv 2 works fine! Now I bought and download/installed the addons. No error during the download. Impulse shows now both addons as installed. But even GalCiv2 still works both addons get an error from windows. What shall I do??

Oh, here my news. I double click the GC2Twilightofarnor-file in the new folder and now it works. But with the launcher file I still get errors? Strange!!

on Jan 14, 2009

I just purchased the Ultimate Bundle and have run into a situation.  I need to install the files on my home computer, but I only have dial up there.  Is there a way to download the game files on my work computer (without installing them there) and then copying the files to my home computer?  If I use Impulse, the at work the files get unpacked automatically.

on Jan 14, 2009

Instead of clicking Install in Impulse, right click on the games and pick "download and archive". Then you can copy those files off (check the location in the restore archive option under the orb menu) with the Impulse installer to a USB drive and take them home. Install impulse there and put the files in the corresponding place you took them from, and it should be able to restore them.
