Opinion? What's that?
If you are unable to activate or register the game (via SDC, or after installing the latest patch), you're likely encountering one of a few common problems.

1) Your game came with NO serials at all.
There have been some reports of legitimate retail copies of the game not coming with a serial key at all. If you are sure your copy is legitimate and it did not come with ANY serials, contact support@stardock.com.

2) You're using the wrong serial.
This is a simple but common mistake. The Collector's/Limited Editions of the game normally include two serial keys (one for the game, one to unlock the special extra content). Be sure you're not trying to register with the CE serial (the one that begins with GC2). Use the other one which consist of 28 letters/numbers (A-F and 0-9 ONLY) with no dashes.

3) You bought a used copy of the game.
If you (intentionally or not) bought a used copy of the game, you may receive a message when attempting to register/activate to the effect of the serial already being in use, or your email address not matching the one the game was originally registered with. Stardock will not remove an activated serial from the original owner's account and give it to you.

You have a few options in this case. You can:
  • Keep the game and stick with the 1.0 version on the disc.
  • Return the game to the place of purchase. Some retailers still accept returns, especially if they resold to you a returned copy that the original owner has effectively pirated (resale is prohibited by the EULA).
  • Contact stardock support (support@stardock.com) and ask about pruchasing a new serial code at reduced cost.

4) You bought the European Limited Edition.

Some copies of the Limited Edition of the game distributed in Europe were shipped with only the code to unlock the special Ltd. content, (beginning with GC2) and not an actual game serial. You can request a game serial by providing your Limited/Collector's Edition serial and email address on this form: http://galciv2.com/paradox/index.aspx

5) You bought the US Collector's or Standard Edition in June or later.
There have been several production runs that shipped to retail in the US without the correct keys. Some Collector's Editions shipped to WalMart and Fred Meyers included two CE keys (beginning with GC2-), but no game serial. Some Standard Editions have shipped to Best Buy and other retailers with a single CE key and nothing else.

In either case, please first try inputting your serial and email address on the European serial exchange page, which has been updated to include most of the serials from these production runs: http://galciv2.com/paradox/index.aspx. If that does not work, please contact support@stardock.com with your problem and they will provide you a game serial to use.

Please keep in mind they can only answer during business hours, so if you contact them on a weekend you will not receive a [human] reply until Monday at the soonest. You should receive an automated reply immediately upon receipt of your email, though (check that it is not filtered by any spam protection you have in place). If you do not receive an automated reply, your own message was likely stopped by Stardock's spam filters, so you will obviously never get a reply to that particular message! If all else fails, try getting on Stardock Central's Chat and speaking with an employee directly during business hours (IRC users: irc.stardock.com, channel #Stardock or #GalCiv).

6) You bought a pirate/bootleg copy of the game.
Despite our best efforts, sellers on eBay and elsewhere continue to sell bootleg copies of GC2. There are usually many tell-tale signs that these copies are not legitimate which become obvious once you receive them: poorly printed disc art, cheap-looking packaging, missing documentation, etc. Most of these copies claim to be used "Import Version" games, and the sellers claim that documentation is excluded because it is not in English. If these copies contain a serial key at all, they are generally already registered or just random gibberish.

In any case, there is no support for users of pirate/bootleg copies. If you purchased them through eBay, you may be able to file a claim and get your money back, but there are no guarantees. If you wish to own the game with updates and support, you must purchase a legitimate copy, which will entitle you to your own serial key and all the associated benefits.

Gosh Kryo its like you know everything. Care to choose me six numbers (0-49) for next weeks lottery.

You've fixed my 'activating after downloading latest update and copying it to pc where game is but which doesn't have internet connection' problem without me even getting so far as to ask you the question. And the response to my 'email off the gobbledegook to support' was instantaneous! I am humbled in your presence.

Like TopGumby I also thought some of the characters in my prod-id were the letter O not the number zero, which took a while to get past. Maybe the 'key it out again, stoopid' message could point out that the prod-id consists only of hex chars to aid the hard of thinking like me.

Can sombebody help me out here please? I just bought GalCiv 2 yesterday and just updated it, and now Im required to activate the game, at first i tried activating it through the popup window that shows up and nothing happened, then i created an account and tried to register the game but i got the "your GalCiv II serial number was not registered", and i also got "Error 3: Your serial number Is Not Registered To This Account", wich is impossible since i o just bought the game, and did not try to register it before. Now I DLed SDC and also cannot register and it also doesn't work, can somebody help me out please? I really want to play with the update. Thanks a lot.

By the way, my serial has 28 characters and a-f letters only. I also bought the game on europe ( france to be specific), but it is not the collector's edition.

Obviously the computer I am on has Internet Access. As this computer is in the master bedroom, and not a more accessible area of the house, I have to play games elsewhere so that it's out of the way (I didn't have this problem at my apartment but now I'm back from college and waiting to go to basic training). Normally, this type of game is great for offline play. Now I just downloaded the update from this comp and put it on the gaming computer using a flash drive. It asked for the Serial Number (aggravating, but acceptable)... After making a useless attempt at looking through the booklet (which was in long term storage due to moving) and finding nothing, I finally found the torn paper shred with the serial number on it. I entered it in and hit proceed. ERROR. Cannot contact the registration server. I don't freaking care if it's registered but its a single player game with no real multi-player (even LAN multi, which would have been sweet). Why can't I just type in the Serial Number and play the game?!?! Why does activation for an OFFLINE game require ONLINE registration? For that matter, why did I have to download Stardock to use this forum when they already made me verify my account through email?

Kyro's suggestion aside (I've owned the game for some time now and have no interest in playing it without the changes in the update), what can I do?

I already contacted support.

Then you've already done everything you can. They should be able to help you Monday.

If I have a CE disk, new computer and operating system is it going to make me e-mail for a Sig file again?
on Feb 14, 2007
I have the GC CE and have just installed it on my new computer with new operating system do I have to get a sig file again to use it? If I get Dark Avatar expansion am I going to need another Sig file for it too? It takes more than a day turn around so I am curious.

If you install off the disk and do not patch, no. However if you install the latest patch you will indeed need to reactivate.
on Feb 14, 2007
And if I buy the DA disk expansion for use with my current GC-2? Will I have to e-mail a sig file again for it?
on Feb 14, 2007
The disc-by-mail option for DA does not require activation.

However, you may be interested to know that the retail box of GC2:Gold includes the latest version of GC2 (1.5) as well as DA, and does not require activation on either. It also includes a $10 rebate for existing owners of retail GC2, so if you include the rebate, buying GC2:Gold at retail would actually be ~$10 cheaper than having a DA disc mailed direct.

Got a problem: Purchased the Deluxe edition last year (March?). My disk crashed. Reinstalled on my replacement disk. Tried to update, but keep getting error message that I am using the wrong serial number. From you posting, apparently I am suppose to a unique number for the Deluxe Edition, rather than the one on the jewel box. My problem is that I kept the original disks in the original jewel box, and the manual. I apparently discarded the documentation with the unique number. Am I out of luck?

on Feb 18, 2007
If you registered it previously (which would be the case if you had patched up and activated it), just pop on over to this page and enter the email address you registered the game to. You'll get an email at that address with your serial in it.
on Feb 18, 2007
Thanks for the quick response. Unfortunately I changed internet provider from "att.net" to "sbc.net" since I first registered. Therefore, sending something to the address that I used when I purchased the game, will be returned as account closed.

on Feb 18, 2007
In that case, just log on to the forum with your old account, go to the My Account link at the top of the page, then go to the Stardock Account link, where you can change the email address on the account (and the serial registrations along with it).
