Opinion? What's that?
If you are unable to activate or register the game (via SDC, or after installing the latest patch), you're likely encountering one of a few common problems.

1) Your game came with NO serials at all.
There have been some reports of legitimate retail copies of the game not coming with a serial key at all. If you are sure your copy is legitimate and it did not come with ANY serials, contact support@stardock.com.

2) You're using the wrong serial.
This is a simple but common mistake. The Collector's/Limited Editions of the game normally include two serial keys (one for the game, one to unlock the special extra content). Be sure you're not trying to register with the CE serial (the one that begins with GC2). Use the other one which consist of 28 letters/numbers (A-F and 0-9 ONLY) with no dashes.

3) You bought a used copy of the game.
If you (intentionally or not) bought a used copy of the game, you may receive a message when attempting to register/activate to the effect of the serial already being in use, or your email address not matching the one the game was originally registered with. Stardock will not remove an activated serial from the original owner's account and give it to you.

You have a few options in this case. You can:
  • Keep the game and stick with the 1.0 version on the disc.
  • Return the game to the place of purchase. Some retailers still accept returns, especially if they resold to you a returned copy that the original owner has effectively pirated (resale is prohibited by the EULA).
  • Contact stardock support (support@stardock.com) and ask about pruchasing a new serial code at reduced cost.

4) You bought the European Limited Edition.

Some copies of the Limited Edition of the game distributed in Europe were shipped with only the code to unlock the special Ltd. content, (beginning with GC2) and not an actual game serial. You can request a game serial by providing your Limited/Collector's Edition serial and email address on this form: http://galciv2.com/paradox/index.aspx

5) You bought the US Collector's or Standard Edition in June or later.
There have been several production runs that shipped to retail in the US without the correct keys. Some Collector's Editions shipped to WalMart and Fred Meyers included two CE keys (beginning with GC2-), but no game serial. Some Standard Editions have shipped to Best Buy and other retailers with a single CE key and nothing else.

In either case, please first try inputting your serial and email address on the European serial exchange page, which has been updated to include most of the serials from these production runs: http://galciv2.com/paradox/index.aspx. If that does not work, please contact support@stardock.com with your problem and they will provide you a game serial to use.

Please keep in mind they can only answer during business hours, so if you contact them on a weekend you will not receive a [human] reply until Monday at the soonest. You should receive an automated reply immediately upon receipt of your email, though (check that it is not filtered by any spam protection you have in place). If you do not receive an automated reply, your own message was likely stopped by Stardock's spam filters, so you will obviously never get a reply to that particular message! If all else fails, try getting on Stardock Central's Chat and speaking with an employee directly during business hours (IRC users: irc.stardock.com, channel #Stardock or #GalCiv).

6) You bought a pirate/bootleg copy of the game.
Despite our best efforts, sellers on eBay and elsewhere continue to sell bootleg copies of GC2. There are usually many tell-tale signs that these copies are not legitimate which become obvious once you receive them: poorly printed disc art, cheap-looking packaging, missing documentation, etc. Most of these copies claim to be used "Import Version" games, and the sellers claim that documentation is excluded because it is not in English. If these copies contain a serial key at all, they are generally already registered or just random gibberish.

In any case, there is no support for users of pirate/bootleg copies. If you purchased them through eBay, you may be able to file a claim and get your money back, but there are no guarantees. If you wish to own the game with updates and support, you must purchase a legitimate copy, which will entitle you to your own serial key and all the associated benefits.

Vista seems to have an issue where you MUST be logged on as the administrator to install anything from a web site. I kept getting activation errors while logged in on my personal account, but things seem fine going through the administrator.
on Jun 20, 2007
Where have you installed GC2? In an area restricted to administrator or in an area allowed for everyone (like "Shared folder" in Windows XP) ?
on Jun 20, 2007
I'm gonna have to go with - HUH? The disks worked correctly, I installed from my user account and could run fine. But when I went out to stardock, the updates would not activate. I switched to the administrator account the program activates, but now I can only seem to run from the administrator account. I'm guessing either Vista ingores the "permissions" request from stardock, or the installer doesn't ask for a permissions request. I'm all guesses here - I would like to understand the process better.

There seems to be an issue with SDC undoing the permissions on the game's folder under Vista, which leads to not being able to run it on a limited account after updating. I'll check with the SDC people in the morning if I can and see if they're aware of this so it can get fixed.

I have a similar problem.
I purchase GalCiv2 Gold online.
I was provided with a single serial number via an email.
When I tried activating, it tells me that the serial is not tied to my email account! I was like WTF?!? I am quite certain my account info is correct because StarDock also remembered my GalCiv (original) purchase!

Had someone stole my just generated Serial by using a serial number generator????
Stardock better solve my problem or I'm gonna swear off their stuff forever..... btw I have cut and pasted all the errors and sent them to the support/ticketing site.

Additional: When I tried to recover my serials, they kept generating DIFFERENT non usable serial numbers to my email for GalCiv2 Gold (my good old GalCiv serial remained the same). Definitely a CRAPPY AND BUGGY backend system handling our serial numbers there!

Hope I get a satisfactory reply from the support soon!

You can only register purchased serials to the same email address as you purchased them with. If you used a different one to buy than you use for SDC, you can simply contact support@stardock.com and request a merge.

This is normal and intended. Each time a list is requested, new ones are generated from the same seed. They are treated as the same for all intennts and purposes by the system, as far as I'm aware. GC1 probably used an older system which doesn't do that.

Update on my activating problem.
A nice guy from support sent me a similar looking code (at least the alphabet part looked the same) and asked me to reactivate. I cut and pasted it and viola, successfully registered Dark Avatar. With trepidation, I used the same code to try to activate Gal Civ2 Dread Lords (non- expansion) and viola it also worked! Thank goodness for their fast response (1 night's sleep as I'm in Asia).

Yes it was the same email account. No mis-type here.

My response would be "I beg your pardon...." or "HUH?". Serial numbers are regenerated with new seeds? If that is so, why does the new serial numbers not follow the accepted format by the activation program, i.e. alphanumerics with dashes inter-spaced?

Anyway thanks for the help. I am glad their support is as great as their games (Just too bad that I live in Asia with a 12hr time difference that I cannot get support help without 1 night passing between my mail submission and their response, not their fault). I've decided I'll buy Sins of a Solar Empire when it comes out just to support them.

sure - but later.
I always first test a game without patching.

anyhow, thanx a lot for your help.

PS:
ok.. something is still not ok with the grafix:

Patch the game up, or set your system to use US decimalization in Control Panel\Regional Settings (comma as place separator and period as decimal point).

ok... the startup and grafix problems are solved, since I have a new machine with XPpro now.
seems the game is not really compatible to win2K.

so, I'm playing on another machine now than I registered from. is it necessary to re-register the game?

and, where can I download the actual patch without installing "StardockCentral"?

....btw.. the new forums-design is not that breaker.. the edit-frame is black-on-white in a white-on-black forums... cruel...

o, I'm playing on another machine now than I registered from. is it necessary to re-register the game?

Well, registration is the fact to bind your serial-id with your e-mail on Stardock Server. It is done only once.

But the game on your machine needs to be activated. And this is done one time per windows installation.

and, where can I download the actual patch without installing "StardockCentral"?

Well, few weeks ago, a link to get the stand alone patch for GC2 1.4X was available. It seems that is it no longer the case. BTW, what prevents you to install Stardock Central to patch directly the game?

on Aug 03, 2007
> But the game on your machine needs to be activated.

howto?

> what prevents you to install Stardock Central to patch directly the game?

I just don't like such an overload... a big central station to just patch one single game.
and the program checks my system for stardock games and reports to stardock. this fact alone meets the definition of "spyware", even if this may be a harmless case.

so, counterquestion:
what prevented stardock to implement such a conveniant update-system like RiseOfNations or Civilization4 has?
on Aug 03, 2007

Well, Stardock Central allows you:

- to patch any Stardock softwares you may have registred

- to download up-to-date versions of any stardock software you have previously registred, even if they are not longer on your computer (full install)

- to create backup files of thoses software.

There is at least a cavecat: you get only the english version.

hm... not really advantages...

the only other stardock game I own is GalCiv1...

I'm not sure if I ever registered it, but surely not with this account I currently use...

I don't need a download for it, because I have the original CD... just can't find the reg-key at the moment...

so, SDC is not really an advantage for me...

I heard, patch 1.4X is avaliable standalone... where to download it?
