Opinion? What's that?
If you are unable to activate or register the game (via SDC, or after installing the latest patch), you're likely encountering one of a few common problems.

1) Your game came with NO serials at all.
There have been some reports of legitimate retail copies of the game not coming with a serial key at all. If you are sure your copy is legitimate and it did not come with ANY serials, contact support@stardock.com.

2) You're using the wrong serial.
This is a simple but common mistake. The Collector's/Limited Editions of the game normally include two serial keys (one for the game, one to unlock the special extra content). Be sure you're not trying to register with the CE serial (the one that begins with GC2). Use the other one which consist of 28 letters/numbers (A-F and 0-9 ONLY) with no dashes.

3) You bought a used copy of the game.
If you (intentionally or not) bought a used copy of the game, you may receive a message when attempting to register/activate to the effect of the serial already being in use, or your email address not matching the one the game was originally registered with. Stardock will not remove an activated serial from the original owner's account and give it to you.

You have a few options in this case. You can:
  • Keep the game and stick with the 1.0 version on the disc.
  • Return the game to the place of purchase. Some retailers still accept returns, especially if they resold to you a returned copy that the original owner has effectively pirated (resale is prohibited by the EULA).
  • Contact stardock support (support@stardock.com) and ask about pruchasing a new serial code at reduced cost.

4) You bought the European Limited Edition.

Some copies of the Limited Edition of the game distributed in Europe were shipped with only the code to unlock the special Ltd. content, (beginning with GC2) and not an actual game serial. You can request a game serial by providing your Limited/Collector's Edition serial and email address on this form: http://galciv2.com/paradox/index.aspx

5) You bought the US Collector's or Standard Edition in June or later.
There have been several production runs that shipped to retail in the US without the correct keys. Some Collector's Editions shipped to WalMart and Fred Meyers included two CE keys (beginning with GC2-), but no game serial. Some Standard Editions have shipped to Best Buy and other retailers with a single CE key and nothing else.

In either case, please first try inputting your serial and email address on the European serial exchange page, which has been updated to include most of the serials from these production runs: http://galciv2.com/paradox/index.aspx. If that does not work, please contact support@stardock.com with your problem and they will provide you a game serial to use.

Please keep in mind they can only answer during business hours, so if you contact them on a weekend you will not receive a [human] reply until Monday at the soonest. You should receive an automated reply immediately upon receipt of your email, though (check that it is not filtered by any spam protection you have in place). If you do not receive an automated reply, your own message was likely stopped by Stardock's spam filters, so you will obviously never get a reply to that particular message! If all else fails, try getting on Stardock Central's Chat and speaking with an employee directly during business hours (IRC users: irc.stardock.com, channel #Stardock or #GalCiv).

6) You bought a pirate/bootleg copy of the game.
Despite our best efforts, sellers on eBay and elsewhere continue to sell bootleg copies of GC2. There are usually many tell-tale signs that these copies are not legitimate which become obvious once you receive them: poorly printed disc art, cheap-looking packaging, missing documentation, etc. Most of these copies claim to be used "Import Version" games, and the sellers claim that documentation is excluded because it is not in English. If these copies contain a serial key at all, they are generally already registered or just random gibberish.

In any case, there is no support for users of pirate/bootleg copies. If you purchased them through eBay, you may be able to file a claim and get your money back, but there are no guarantees. If you wish to own the game with updates and support, you must purchase a legitimate copy, which will entitle you to your own serial key and all the associated benefits.

My guess is once they do the account merge, you'll simply delete your old sig.bin files, then re-activative, creating new (and working) ones.

This is, I think, my first post here, but I've had the original GalCivII (My father bought it years ago, and I..."borrowed it" for an extended stay.   )for a long time. However, I just bought a Gold Edition GalCivII from Circuit City last night, after reading stellar reviews of the new Twilight of the Arnor expansion. So, I came home with it, and purchased Twilight of the Arnor as a download+CD thing as I was installing the game.

All worked well until I downloaded Stardock Central and tried to activate GalCivII Gold, as I presumably have to do that to download and install Twilight of the Arnor. Well, it is not recognizing the key. At all. The game apparently accepts it just fine, as it accepted the serial when I installed it off the CDs. Stardock Central just says it's invalid. I've retyped it several times, and I'm absolutely certain I've gotten it correct. The game itself is new and unopened (except by me obviously). I had to break the outer seal of the box, and the wrap around the jewel case, so it's very obviously un-tampered-with.

It's starting to upset me a little.

I thought it might be Windows Vista doing this, as I'm on a Vista machine, but it recognized my Arnor key I recieved via e-mail just fine. I'd like to note that it's a 30-character key (Six groups of five number/letter combinations), and I have no idea if that's right or not for the gold edition. I'd also like to note that there's only one key on the sticker on the back of the jewel-case, whether that matters or not.

I'd really like to start playing, and I want to begin said playing with Twilight of the Arnor downloaded and installed. So, I have two questsions:

1) Is there some non-SDC way to register the game to my Stardock account (Which has Twilight of the Arnor and Sins of a Solar Empire already on it)? If so, where?

2) If not, or if that option doesn't work, what should I do? I've already sent off an email explaining the situation as clearly as possible to Stardock tech support, but should I call them tomorrow (Monday), if that would expedite it? Can they do anything to help me?

You can call, or also just post your ticket number here and I can have them pull it up first thing.

Make sure you've got the latest version of SDC, and also try the Refresh XML button in SDC's internet settings. Old version of SDC/xml files is the only reason I can think of that it would be just plain missing.

Thanks for your help its downloading now My problem was my copy of DL was the collectors edition so I had to do that thing to get a new serial code. Yay! Twilight of the Arnor is 40% downloaded
on May 20, 2008
Okay...this may be easier than it is looking so far, but if someone can just give me simple directions I'd appreciate it.

Current status is that I just bought the whole deal by download only. Stardock Central is installed and running, and currently shows GalCivII and Tutorials as installed, movies installing, and everything through Twilight as queued. Clearly that is going to take a while to finish, which gives me time to figure out what to do next.

GCII has shown up on this machine, as if it is ready to run, which this machine is not anywhere near capable of doing. The machine I play games on is in the other room with no internet connection. Between here and there I have a one gig flash drive.

On that machine is a disk installed version of GCII. It has never been updated in any way and I have no problem with having paid for what I assume is the fully updated version today. The disk will make a good coaster, and Stardock has more than earned the money.

So....my theory is that once all this downloading is done there will be some obvious way to use some sort of archive function to make the installations portable, move them to the flash along with Stardock Central, install and run SDC on my machine, unpack the archives somehow, then follow the directions about 'activating upgrades by e-mail' that I saw somewhere around here. Am I close?

on May 20, 2008
Once you've got it all down, just right click on GC2 in SDC and choose archive entire application. It should prompt if you want to do all the modules as well (yes). Then copy the .sdc package from C:\Program Files\Stardock\Stardock Central\BACKUP along with the SDC installer to the other machine by whatever means are handy. Install SDC, then doubleclick the .sdc package in explorer and it'll be installed.

Since the machine isn't connected it'll take a trip back to activate each of DL/DA/TA via email (when it fails to activate on first run it will provide that option), but that's all there is to it.

Fair enough...thanks.
on May 20, 2008
Follow up issue...SDC seems to need an internet connection to run. Is there a secret to launching it in an unpack archive only mode or something?
on May 21, 2008
It's been a long while since I did it myself, but I'm pretty sure it gives up after it can't connect for a while, and you should then be able to do the unpack offline. If that's not the case, then contact support@stardock.com and they should be able to get you through it.
on May 21, 2008
They actually did already...well, someone did, from the chatroom. I took a chunk of registry from this machine and merged it on that machine. Once that was done SDC could run...it still complains about the lack of connection, but it will run. All is well now. GC2 and DA are activated and the request by e-mail is in for TotA. I figure I'll give this version of GC2 a run, since it is many upgrades beyond what I had, and then go a couple runs through DA, so I can be patient about the last activation code.

I want to thank everyone involved for getting me through a process that I know I made far harder than it needs to be, and for a great game.
on May 22, 2008
Finally got everything registered, up, and running. Apparently the key on my GalCiv II Gold case was for the Dark Avatar Download+CD. After I was told how improbable this was, showing pictures to the tech support guy of the box, manual, CD, and serial code cleared it up nicely, so I finally have Twilight of the Arnor up and running.

Thanks, Kryo, for upping the priority on my support request. I can't imagine how long it might've taken without that.

If I knew how to give you a Karma point, I would. But unfortunately I have no idea how that works, eheh.

Edit: Karma point given. Silly me!

Can you explain what chunk of registry you moved? I'm trying to do the same thing, but not knowing how long a reply will take from activate@stardock.com, I'd like to get my offline gaming computer going with DL and DA. I tried the two obvious registry entries and the game said that it appeared to be activated, but the SID and machine identification was different (or something to that effect).

@Kryo - should I have gotten an auto-reply from activate@stardock.com or is that only if I send something to support? Should I forward the email to support or wait?
