Opinion? What's that?
If you are unable to activate or register the game (via SDC, or after installing the latest patch), you're likely encountering one of a few common problems.

1) Your game came with NO serials at all.
There have been some reports of legitimate retail copies of the game not coming with a serial key at all. If you are sure your copy is legitimate and it did not come with ANY serials, contact support@stardock.com.

2) You're using the wrong serial.
This is a simple but common mistake. The Collector's/Limited Editions of the game normally include two serial keys (one for the game, one to unlock the special extra content). Be sure you're not trying to register with the CE serial (the one that begins with GC2). Use the other one which consist of 28 letters/numbers (A-F and 0-9 ONLY) with no dashes.

3) You bought a used copy of the game.
If you (intentionally or not) bought a used copy of the game, you may receive a message when attempting to register/activate to the effect of the serial already being in use, or your email address not matching the one the game was originally registered with. Stardock will not remove an activated serial from the original owner's account and give it to you.

You have a few options in this case. You can:
  • Keep the game and stick with the 1.0 version on the disc.
  • Return the game to the place of purchase. Some retailers still accept returns, especially if they resold to you a returned copy that the original owner has effectively pirated (resale is prohibited by the EULA).
  • Contact stardock support (support@stardock.com) and ask about pruchasing a new serial code at reduced cost.

4) You bought the European Limited Edition.

Some copies of the Limited Edition of the game distributed in Europe were shipped with only the code to unlock the special Ltd. content, (beginning with GC2) and not an actual game serial. You can request a game serial by providing your Limited/Collector's Edition serial and email address on this form: http://galciv2.com/paradox/index.aspx

5) You bought the US Collector's or Standard Edition in June or later.
There have been several production runs that shipped to retail in the US without the correct keys. Some Collector's Editions shipped to WalMart and Fred Meyers included two CE keys (beginning with GC2-), but no game serial. Some Standard Editions have shipped to Best Buy and other retailers with a single CE key and nothing else.

In either case, please first try inputting your serial and email address on the European serial exchange page, which has been updated to include most of the serials from these production runs: http://galciv2.com/paradox/index.aspx. If that does not work, please contact support@stardock.com with your problem and they will provide you a game serial to use.

Please keep in mind they can only answer during business hours, so if you contact them on a weekend you will not receive a [human] reply until Monday at the soonest. You should receive an automated reply immediately upon receipt of your email, though (check that it is not filtered by any spam protection you have in place). If you do not receive an automated reply, your own message was likely stopped by Stardock's spam filters, so you will obviously never get a reply to that particular message! If all else fails, try getting on Stardock Central's Chat and speaking with an employee directly during business hours (IRC users: irc.stardock.com, channel #Stardock or #GalCiv).

6) You bought a pirate/bootleg copy of the game.
Despite our best efforts, sellers on eBay and elsewhere continue to sell bootleg copies of GC2. There are usually many tell-tale signs that these copies are not legitimate which become obvious once you receive them: poorly printed disc art, cheap-looking packaging, missing documentation, etc. Most of these copies claim to be used "Import Version" games, and the sellers claim that documentation is excluded because it is not in English. If these copies contain a serial key at all, they are generally already registered or just random gibberish.

In any case, there is no support for users of pirate/bootleg copies. If you purchased them through eBay, you may be able to file a claim and get your money back, but there are no guarantees. If you wish to own the game with updates and support, you must purchase a legitimate copy, which will entitle you to your own serial key and all the associated benefits.

Stardock support
This is a workaround activation fix for the Steam version on Windows 8.
You should only have to do this once, unless you re-install on this PC or another:
Download: http://sd.stardock.com/sdactivate_legacy.zip

Please extract its contents here:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\galactic civilizations ii - ultimate edition
If it asks you to overwrite the existing files say yes to all.

Run the REGISTER_GC2ULTIMATE.CMD file.
Enter your account information and serial key when prompted.
That should activate your game and get you going.

The most dreadful experience I have ever had in registering a product. Bad un-updated programing and installation files. Poor activation process which will leave a few members of your family passing away due to the plague before you get it to work properly. I have both keys run win 7 tried all possible ways. You made this comfortable for yourselves to prevent piracy, what you did in fact is cause potential players or customers turn away in disgust and frustration. I want everyone to read this post I'm typing at 4:30 AM. Maybe if we tried a "fade" protection this would be less of an issue. if I don't have an intelligent response or solution on this thread I will make a you-n00b video of the GC2 CD being snapped in half. Good day.

We cannot offer a solution as you've unfortunately failed to mention what issue or error you are encountering with activation. However if you contact support@stardock.com with the details, they should be able to get it resolved one way or the other.

I bought this game years ago on disks. Formally, I updated via Stardock, and then Impulse a few years back. Recently, I installed Gal Civ II on my new laptop, but GameStop won't allow it to update. I also purchased Dark Avatar a few years ago, and I would like to use that also. Dark Avatar was a digital download. Dark Avatar does not even appear on my GameStop list.  GameStop says to contact Stardock. I have sent an email to support@stardock.com with the details. Its been several days, no response. Please advise.

Stardock support is useless, I raised a ticket 2 weeks ago about have problems registering 2 games and I've only received the automated reply. I'm going to my bank to get a refund due to non supply of goods. Really slack service.

Gamestop won't let me update my Galciv 2 because it says I don't have a product key registered.  I can't right click on it in their interface and there is no place to put a product key except for starting the game and entering it using the "update serial" button which appears to do nothing.

I bought the CD originally years ago, registered it with Impulse, and now I can't update the game because you guys sold out to Game Stop.

This is disappointing.  Every time I try to run the expansion it complains I don't have the latest version.

on Dec 02, 2012

We are sorry for the delays, support is currently under heavy load due to the recent holiday and release of Windows 8, so their response times may not be as they typically are. If you have a support ticket in, please make certain that you do NOT send additional mails before receiving a human reply, as doing so will reset your place in the queue and further delay any response.

If you have registered the game prior to a year and a half ago when Impulse was sold to GameStop, they should have the registrations in their system and be able to provide updates. If GameStop support is unable to resolve the problem, please contact support@stardock.com directly and they should be able to work something out to get you up to date.

If you have not registered the game yet at all or bought it later than last spring, please contact support@stardock.com directly.

I sent an e-mail to support.

If I could register my old CD on the webpage I could probably be playing now.  Instead the only option is to register Ultimate and my CD code doesn't work for "Ultimate" even though that is effectively what I have now since I own all the add-ons anyway.

I have seen complaints about this since May so I'm kind of surprised that it still requires a separate e-mail (and waiting period) to support in order to resolve.  :-/

Edit:

I was able to install the 1.4 patch from Shack News and that patch forces you to register the software with your serial (which I did).  The registration went okay and the sig.bin file was generated but I still can't get 1.5x.  I click the update button in the launcher and Stardock and Gamestop both still refuse to recognize that I own the game.

Why is registering this game such a cluster of stars?

Edit 2:

Gamestop support says it's Stardock's problem and they won't do anything about it.

I have been having this same issue as well.  I have my product key for Dread Lords, so I don't see why there's this issue going on.  I sent a ticket to support weeks ago.

on Dec 07, 2012

I have received a satisfactory resolution to my situation from Stardock. Thanks!

Day 5 with no reply from Support for me.  This is starting to get annoying.
