Opinion? What's that?
If you are unable to activate or register the game (via SDC, or after installing the latest patch), you're likely encountering one of a few common problems.

1) Your game came with NO serials at all.
There have been some reports of legitimate retail copies of the game not coming with a serial key at all. If you are sure your copy is legitimate and it did not come with ANY serials, contact support@stardock.com.

2) You're using the wrong serial.
This is a simple but common mistake. The Collector's/Limited Editions of the game normally include two serial keys (one for the game, one to unlock the special extra content). Be sure you're not trying to register with the CE serial (the one that begins with GC2). Use the other one which consist of 28 letters/numbers (A-F and 0-9 ONLY) with no dashes.

3) You bought a used copy of the game.
If you (intentionally or not) bought a used copy of the game, you may receive a message when attempting to register/activate to the effect of the serial already being in use, or your email address not matching the one the game was originally registered with. Stardock will not remove an activated serial from the original owner's account and give it to you.

You have a few options in this case. You can:
  • Keep the game and stick with the 1.0 version on the disc.
  • Return the game to the place of purchase. Some retailers still accept returns, especially if they resold to you a returned copy that the original owner has effectively pirated (resale is prohibited by the EULA).
  • Contact stardock support (support@stardock.com) and ask about pruchasing a new serial code at reduced cost.

4) You bought the European Limited Edition.

Some copies of the Limited Edition of the game distributed in Europe were shipped with only the code to unlock the special Ltd. content, (beginning with GC2) and not an actual game serial. You can request a game serial by providing your Limited/Collector's Edition serial and email address on this form: http://galciv2.com/paradox/index.aspx

5) You bought the US Collector's or Standard Edition in June or later.
There have been several production runs that shipped to retail in the US without the correct keys. Some Collector's Editions shipped to WalMart and Fred Meyers included two CE keys (beginning with GC2-), but no game serial. Some Standard Editions have shipped to Best Buy and other retailers with a single CE key and nothing else.

In either case, please first try inputting your serial and email address on the European serial exchange page, which has been updated to include most of the serials from these production runs: http://galciv2.com/paradox/index.aspx. If that does not work, please contact support@stardock.com with your problem and they will provide you a game serial to use.

Please keep in mind they can only answer during business hours, so if you contact them on a weekend you will not receive a [human] reply until Monday at the soonest. You should receive an automated reply immediately upon receipt of your email, though (check that it is not filtered by any spam protection you have in place). If you do not receive an automated reply, your own message was likely stopped by Stardock's spam filters, so you will obviously never get a reply to that particular message! If all else fails, try getting on Stardock Central's Chat and speaking with an employee directly during business hours (IRC users: irc.stardock.com, channel #Stardock or #GalCiv).

6) You bought a pirate/bootleg copy of the game.
Despite our best efforts, sellers on eBay and elsewhere continue to sell bootleg copies of GC2. There are usually many tell-tale signs that these copies are not legitimate which become obvious once you receive them: poorly printed disc art, cheap-looking packaging, missing documentation, etc. Most of these copies claim to be used "Import Version" games, and the sellers claim that documentation is excluded because it is not in English. If these copies contain a serial key at all, they are generally already registered or just random gibberish.

In any case, there is no support for users of pirate/bootleg copies. If you purchased them through eBay, you may be able to file a claim and get your money back, but there are no guarantees. If you wish to own the game with updates and support, you must purchase a legitimate copy, which will entitle you to your own serial key and all the associated benefits.

Day 10 and nothing.

on Dec 16, 2012

It's been two weeks and I have not received a fix.  Is support that backed up?  Can I get someone to look at this?  I want to be able to play the game I paid for.

If it's not fixed by the 21st of Dec. then I guess I'll discontinue buying any further Stardock products and relay my experiences to everyone on all the gamer forums I frequent.  Three weeks is PLENTY of time for some support person to address this.

I've been VERY patient.

on Dec 16, 2012

What was your ticket number?

on Dec 17, 2012

I have ticket#:   BRM-701-39504

Thanks for checking on this for me.

I went to the URL the e-mail gave me to check on my ticket status and it doesn't show any tickets at all and I never get any replies.  Something broke I think.

All I need is to be able to download the latest Galciv 2 patch so my 2 add-ons will not complain about not having the latest patch.

I bought the 2 add-ons via Stardock digital download but I bought the CD from a store.  Gamestop says they won't help me and they basically said I had to go to Stardock for a fix.

I'm not mad at you by the way or even really mad at all.  I just don't have any other place to go since support isn't working and I was getting frustrated.

Thanks!!

I'm real sorry with the delay.  I hope the resolution suffices as an apology.

Well...  Sort of.

I got an email that said Stardock gave me Ultimate so I could download it, but when I go to the Stardock Download page I only have listed what is below.   How do I get "ultimate"?

When log into my account I see this.  Where is "Ultimate"?   Am I missing something?  I am confused.  Thanks.

GalCiv II - Dark Avatar (Download + CD)

Serial number:   xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxhahahano
Please install the GameStop PC app and logon with your GameStop/Impulse account to download this software.

GalCiv II: Twilight of the Arnor (Digital Download)

Odd.  Look again.

on Dec 30, 2012

I was on vacation.

It works now.  Thanks.

I think support was pretty good for a game I bought so many years ago.  I'll be waiting around and have good memories for the next Stardock game.  Thanks again.  I'm appreciative and I hope I wasn't too grumpy (and I apologize if I was).

Hello

I haven't played Galactic Civilizations 2 in about 3 years, but decided to play it again after I heard about GalCiv3 coming out. When I load it up it says there's updates for the game, and redirects me to Impulse, which I still have installed. It won't let me login because Impulse no longer exists (I assume). I've discovered that GameStop took over the service, but it won't accept my login credentials. I tried registering a new account, but it won't let me use my email address because it shows that email already in use. So I know my account was transferred, but for whatever reason it won't let me access it.

In desperation I registered a new Gamestop account, but of course my games are not associated with it so I'm no further ahead. I also registered for Stardock Central, but it doesn't list or detect any of my Stardock games. I'm out of ideas!

I own the physical copies of my games, so all I want to do is update them with the latest updates and patches. How do I do it? Any help would be appreciated.

GameStop should still have all accounts from Impulse. You'd need to log in using the email address, not the username though, and do an account conversion after you log in. Beyond that though you would need to talk to their support about any problems with their service.

If you bought from us or registered the game prior to GameStop taking over Impulse, then your account under your old email address should still be here and still have the games on it. Though we only have direct downloads here for the Ultimate Edition. If you had the base game and expansions separately, or if you can't locate your old account, or if you can but it's missing registrations, contact support@stardock.com and they should be able to get everything squared away for you.

If you registered previously, then creating a new account won't work since your keys are already registered to another.

Actually, you do have direct downloads for the older editions too. I noticed this, when I was taking a look at my account recently. My guess is, that this hasn't been the case for long.

on Oct 26, 2013

Yep, that's new

on Oct 31, 2013

I need some help here. This is ridiculous.

Ive got the Gamestop app on my screen, it says I cant get the latest patch because I haven't registered the game. I registered the game when I installed it didn't I???  Trying to update galciv2 ultimate edition that came in a space compilation bundle.

Even if I didn't Im not seeing where I am supposed to register this game with gamestop.

Does anyone remember the good old simple days when you just used to download a zip patch direct from the game designer? Ive spent the last 20mins now downloading various apps & updates, registering here and there with multiple companies it seems. I have now been dealing with 3 companies to try to get one frakking patch!

Please game devs stop making things more complicated than they need to be!

on Oct 31, 2013

You can register here (if you haven't already) and download the latest version here after doing so.

If you bought from Steam or another online store, the same should have provided the latest version already.

GameStop should only be used if you bought it online from them, or bought it from us prior to their takeover of Impulse. They no longer accept external registrations and haven't for some time.

on Nov 05, 2013

Ive contacted stardock and they gave me a steam code to register the game with them. Which I now have done.

The continuing problem is Steam wants me to download the entire game. I have the game loaded onto my machine already from the disc copy I have.

I just want a patch. That's all.

Can someone please direct me to a patch I can download? Im now onto 4 companies involved, multiple emails, messages and delays. It really should not be this difficult to find and use a patch.
